Safe Harbor Design Build was started several years ago primarily to promote ICF construction in the Southern Florida Hurricane Prone Areas. Although the building technique and systems have been around for generations, it is not the primary construction system of choice. Why?

We have asked any number of contractors why they do not promote it and typically get several reasons.

• I have been building with CBS for 30 years...why change?
• A friend tried it several years ago and it was not pretty...crooked walls, blow outs...and the excuses go on.
• It's too expensive.
• What is ICF?
• We have heard too many mis-truths and our mission was to correct the misconceptions.

If you or someone you know has had a problem with ICF's ...it was not constructed properly or an inferior product was used.

Contractors:

• Less skilled labor is required thus reducing costs.
• Construction time is reduced allowing more projects in a given year...and yes...the economy will eventually get better.
• Instead of lifting heavy cinder blocks your crews carry foam panels and let concrete pump trucks do the heavy work. This reduces you workman comp claims and reduces your premiums.
• Experienced crews are efficient. With ICF's the wall is constructed, insulated (R-22+!!), and the surfaces are ready for interior and exterior attachment in a one-step process.
• When all the costs of CBS that are required are compared to this one step process..ICF construction should never be more expensive.
• This is the construction technique of the future. You can do it, so don't get left behind. This was not typed on an IBM Selectric and delivered to you via snail mail. Things change.

Architects/Engineers:

• Be knowledgeable of these systems so you can offer them as an alternative to your clients.
• Any architectural style, size and exterior treatment can be constructed with ICF's.
• ICF construction is an engineered system but the systems are flexible and can accommodate your creative designs. Simply put ...ICF's are simply a forming system for a reinforced concrete structure.
• These systems are equally appropriate for commercial, institutional, as well as residential construction.
• And of course it benefits the environment. The systems contribute to Leed Points but more importantly concrete lasts many life times and the forming wastes are essentially zero.

Homeowners and Commercial Clients:

• Why spend money on outdated building systems? Would anyone want to go back to Horse and Buggies? Model A's? We doubt it too.
• ICF structures are your best bet against Mother Nature. They are stronger than stick frame structures as well as CBS.
• The time to build with ICF is reduced so you move in faster and "time is money" saving you double payments.
• ICF's are energy efficient saving on AC energy costs. They are also quieter and termites hate concrete.
• Several insurance companies are starting to realize the many benefits of ICF structure and offer reduced insurance premiums.
